Norm and Colby Slater:

The term "Winged Forward" in Rugby "Football" refers to the position Norman B. Slater played at Berkeley High form 1910 to 1012. In 1910 Rugby was a major sport and Norman played varsity as a first year student. In 1911 Norman led Berkeley High to a 10-0-1 record and the Northern California Championship. The team then traveled to Southern Cal where Berkeley played and lost to Los Angeles High 6-5. In 1912 Berkeley High, led by Norman and his young brother Colby "Babe" Slater, again won the Northern California Rugby Championship with an 8-0 record. For the second year in a row, they traveled to Southern Cal to play Los Angeles High, but this time the 20-1 underdog Yellow Jackets won in a thrilling game 4-0 becoming California State Champions.
After graduation, Norman continued to play Rugby with the Berkeley Titans and the SF Olympic Club, winning championships with each club.

At age 30, Norman and the younger Colby represented the US on the 1924 Olympic Team in Paris. They defeated the Romanian team and then the French team in the finals of the VIII Olympiad earning a gold medal. A versatile athlete, Norman also played varsity basketball for Berkeley High.

Following his years in rugby, Norman farmed in Woodland as a partner at the Conway Ranch and later farmed for many years in Clarksburg, CA.

Alumni Players Lost in 2016:

The Berkeley Rhinos tragically lost two alumni players in the summer of 2016. We are grateful for the time we had together and we will forever miss them.
Efejon Ustenci, affectionately called Efe, graduated from Berkeley High in the Class of 2016. He was named Rookie of the Year his senior year after becoming one of the highest scoring players on the team. He preferred to play on the wing where his incredible speed and tenacity dominated the open field. He had an intense work ethic that challenged his teammates to keep up with him as well as a sense of humor that kept spirits high during challenging times.
Craig Fletcher Cooks graduated from Berkeley High in the Class of 2014. He was a co-captain his senior year while playing outside center and wing. He was a vocal and competitive player who always expected the most from his teammates, his coaches, and himself. Craig was known for his fierce defensive launch and his intelligence that enabled him to make quick decisions and clever plays. He was a natural leader and an inspiring friend on and off the field.
